Parental contributions are one of the four types of contributions the court will consider in the second stage of the four-step property settlement process.

Assessing parental contributions is an important part of the four-step property settlement process. Parenting, homemaker and other non-financial contributions are significant in balancing the direct financial contributions made by parties to a former marriage of de facto relationship.

What is a parental contribution?

Parenting duties can include activities such as:

  • General upbringing of children
  • Taking children to and from school
  • Care of very young or disabled children
  • Facilitating sporting or extra-curricular activities
  • Helping children with their homework

How will parental contributions be assessed?

The court will look at which party has performed such duties over the course of the relationship.

The court will be concerned with the quality of the parenting contributions performed by that party.

Certain factors (such as whether a nanny or child care was used by the parties) will be relevant in determining the weight placed upon parenting contributions.
