Alongside the financial contributions made to a relationship, the court will consider any domestic contributions made.

Domestic contributions are an important balancing factor in the process of property settlement before the court. The court will not be preoccupied with the nature or kind of domestic duties performed; rather with the fact that such duties were performed at all and by who.

The main factors the court will have regard to include:

  • Whether the domestic duties in question could be considered full-time or part-time
  • Whether domestic assistance (such as housekeeping or property maintenance) was utilised

This second factor of assistance will be relevant in discounting the weight attributed to homemaker contributions. It is irrelevant whether such assistance was the result of payment or through the generosity of a friend or family member.
