Spousal maintenance means ongoing financial support for a former partner to a marriage or de facto relationship.
Even after divorce or separation, former spouses may have a duty to support or maintain one another. The extent of that support depends on whether a party is held to be unable to sufficiently meet their own reasonable needs and whether the other party has the capacity to pay.
Spousal maintenance will be considered as part of an overall property settlement.
